1. Thickening Agent

There are countless styling products that all work a little differently, but if you have thinning hair, you’ll want some kind of thickening agent in your regimen.

Hair shafts aren't smooth. They’re covered in shingle-like coverings called a cuticle. The raised shingles grip nearby hairs to group them together. These groups - called strands - can include 20 to 100 hairs. When hairs clump together, they expose your scalp, so you want to keep them spread out to give you even coverage.

By one mechanism or another, hair thickening agents bind to your hair shafts and prevent them from gripping one another. Depending on the product, a thickening agent may be sprayed or massaged into your hair.

Whatever you put in your hair, avoid products that create a sheen. "When you have shiny products, you're going to have light reflecting off the product," Diana Schmidtke, a Los Angeles-based stylist, told The Wall Street Journal. Skip the gels and pomades because they’ll bounce light off your pate.

2. Sunblock

It’s surprising how much work your hair does to protect your head from the sun. Guys with full heads of hair never massage sunblock into their scalp, but that’s critically important for bald guys or men with thinning hair.

Long-term sun damage is a serious concern. “Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging,” says WebMD. “Over time, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching.”

Sun-damaged skin also bruises and tears more easily, and takes longer to heal. Essentially, skin ravaged by the sun makes you look older, which is not an effect you’re looking for.

Besides, sunburns can triple your risk of acquiring skin cancer later in life. So it’s important to start protecting your head as soon as some scalp starts to show, even if you’re only dealing with a small bald spot.

Sunblock uses an “SPF” rating. The higher the SPF, the more ultraviolet-B light it blocks. SPF45 blocks 98% of UVB rays. (Note: You can’t block 100% of all UVB rays.)

3. Headwipes

Hair has the remarkable ability to trap sweat. (You may have noticed this effect on other parts of your body.) It clings to the hair shafts until it evaporates or you wash it out.

But when you start to lose your hair, you notice a strange phenomenon: Whenever you sweat, it lays on your scalp or drips down your face and neck. It can be maddening, because it makes people think you sweat a lot, even though you sweat the same amount they do.

Headwipes are gentle, moisturizing towelettes to capture the moisture from your face, neck, and scalp. They wipe away dirt, sweat, and oils that build up on your skin throughout the day and give you that fresh-face feeling like after washing your face. Keep a package of these at home, in your car, and in your desk at work.
