In 2017 we're getting closer than ever to goals that seemed far off. This includes the cure for hair loss - which is likely some 5 to 10 years away - so it's soon! Every month we’re inching towards new hair loss solutions with new products for hair regrowth and maintenance goals, but what exactly are these best and latest hair loss treatments available on today’s market?

For this blog, we at Hairmop, cover the best treatments from non-invasive to the maximally invasive (aka hair loss surgery). We also discuss the latest hair loss innovations coming down the pipeline. Hairmop has broken down the facts and figures so you know what’s available now and for the future.

hair loss medication

Non-Invasive Hair Loss Products

At the moment, there’s no doubt the least invasive way to successfully treat male pattern baldness or ‘androgenic alopecia’ is by a qualified doctor prescribing anti-androgens or ‘DHT blockers’. Whether it’s FDA-approved Finasteride (also known as Propecia) or a natural prescription of saw palmetto, anti-androgenic medication works to inhibit the enzyme that stimulates DHT (to read in detail the effects of DHT and anti-androgens on hair loss, see our blog post ‘Understanding Hair Loss Means Understanding Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and DHT blockers’).

While it may take a few months of consistent use to see effect, anti-androgens have been known to reduce and reverse hair loss for men whose hair is thinning. Additionally, if you use DHT blockers in combination with other known hair loss treatments (such as FDA approved Minoxidil) you have an even greater chance of recovering your hair. Read ‘What Hair Loss Treatment is Best For What Stage of Hair Loss’ for information about the medication you'll want to use.

growth factor injections for hair loss

Minimally Invasive Hair Loss Products

You may have heard of platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections for hair loss. Well, now an even more advanced version of this treatment is available on the market. Growth Factor Therapy, rather than isolating only your blood’s platelet rich plasma, isolates the growth factors found in the blood (be it naturally occurring proteins or steroid hormones). The rich serum is then injected to the hair follicles to stimulate amazing hair regrowth.

Growth Factor Therapy can be used in combination with non-invasive hair loss treatments, such as Finasteride and Minoxidil. That’s why Hairmop is collaborating with DHI Australia, a leading hair loss clinic that offers the treatment. To find out more, read our interview with experienced DHI Trichologist, Paul Green, where he explains Growth Factor and how it can be used with Hairmop’s hair loss treatment packages.

hair transplant surgery for hair loss

Invasive Hair Loss Products

Hair transplant surgery involves taking skin with hair from the back and sides of the head and grafting it to top and front of the scalp where the hair typically thins. Developed in the 1980s, the procedure used to involve large grafts of around 12 to 20 hairs which created a somewhat unnatural look. Today, however, grafts of 1 to 4 hairs are implanted close together to create a look that is natural and unaffected. At DHI, hair follicles are transplanted one by one at a specific angle and depth, using the patented DHI implanter, to create 100% natural results and viability.

Although transplants yield permanent results, they don’t stop you from losing hair in areas not treated, so to prevent a sparse look, it is ideal to use hair loss medications such as Propecia and Minoxidil to continue hair regrowth and combat bald patches.

Hair Loss Products Not Yet on the Market

What about those breakthrough 'future' technologies we mentioned earlier? There's now a 'hair cloning' technique still in the laboratory stage in Japan, where follicular stem cells are developed with the capacity to create a new hair follicle. Meanwhile, in America, researchers are working to create hair technology that regenerates shut down hair follicles by mixing hair follicles and skin cells in a test tube. Otherwise, the newly discovered ‘Sonic Hedgehog gene’ (a gene that controls follicle size and growth) is being studied by scientists who are looking to use it for a hair loss treatment.

The Takeaway:

As you can see, our understanding of what causes hair loss, and therefore our hair loss products and treatments, are innovating at a rapid pace. It’s an exciting time for hair loss sufferers!
